But we've been super busy at Clover & Violet}, but thought I'd drop in and share one of my favorite new tools. It's called "What Font" and it allows you to see what font is being used on a website (as long as the font isn't on an image, of course).

All you have to do is drag the "What Font" button to your bookmark bar {similar to the "Pin It" button on Pinterest}, then when you run across a font you're curious about, just click the "What Font" and then hover over the text. Here's an example from the Clover & Violet blog:

And one more from Rhonda, Quilter in the Gap {since I recently set her blog up on Genesis, I thought I'd show it too!}:

I really love this little tool to help find some great fonts that can be used in titles, and not just on images. Remember how I posted about Google Web Fonts? Well, here's a chance to discover some great fonts and use them in your titles!

I've been spending most of my time sewing lately, but I have done a tiny bit of graphic designing still...so, here's the new header for Janice at Better off Thread! After a few failed attempts, we arrived at this, I thought it was fun that the word thread might look like it was a bit of fabric stitched to the page, without being too busy either.

The biggest chanllenge was finding the right color scheme. Janice likes bright colors, and while bright is beautiful in images, it can be hard to nail it down to one or two actual colors, without it looking just plain weird, here's one of my attempts that was great in theory, but ugly in real life:

While I was going for a bright rainbow, it turned out to look more like a muddy mess...so I tried this color scheme instead {and switched up the fonts too - Rockwell Extra Bold & Clementine Sketch}:

I have a couple other little projects in the works, which I love doing because it really helps improve my graphics skills while providing a little bit of prettiness for others, but it seems that the sewing commitments are never slowing down, so posts here will probably be few and far between.

In the meantime, you're welcome to visit me over at Clover & Violet and see the other stuff I've been pouring my time into!

Here is my most recent design. It is fairly simple, and based on the colors of Vintage Modern by Bonnie & Camille for Moda. Here are the colors I picked:

This design was actually part of my giveaway from Plum and June, but the winner of that giveaway had a blog design and just had me do a few customizations. So, instead of letting this design sit idle, I put it to use.

The background chevrons and the background of the sewing machine were purchased from Katie's Wish, and the sewing machine silhouette is one I made from a picture of a vintage sewing machine. I really like how this one turned out!

Remember my blog design giveaway...well, I am slow to deliver, but I finally finished Alison's blog, Little Bunny Quilts! She wanted citrus and wine colors, I had a difficult time choosing, but with a little help, we decided on these!

I also experimented with the sidebar title images {tutorial coming soon} and the dashed line around the menu buttons {it took a ridiculous amount of effort to get those little lines, but I love them!}.

I just discovered Google Web Fonts...who knew one could integrate fun, free fonts in a blog post? Curious what I mean? The pink words above are a picture, but the words below are actually typed into this post {both are the font Satisfy}:

Testing, testing, testing...

Pretty neat huh? I started with this tutorial. Then, after adding the font to your blog, if you want to use it in a post add the following code right above the </b:skin>

}h1 { font-family: 'Satisfy', cursive; font-weight: 400; }

But substitute the name for the font you're using! Then, when typing a post, add this bit of code around the words that should be the web font:

<div style="font-family: 'Satisfy',cursive;">Text Here

Then adjust the size of the font just as for any other text!

And voilĂ , custom text within a post!

Fun, huh?

I really love fonts...so do most other bloggers, designers, and just people in general...and I really love it when people compile their favorites...so I thought you might enjoy some of my favorites too. I started this image as a place to write out a few fonts I'd stumbled upon and downloaded, that way I can remember what they were called. I don't know how often these will post, but enjoy {all fonts are free, just search their names!}.
Okay, for starters...it seems that whenever I mention watermarking, Pinterest, or Flickr, people assume that I am super worried my photos are going to be stolen, and they kindly remind me {please note, I am not being sarcastic, I think they have the best intentions!} that, in spite of my best efforts, my pictures can still be stolen...

I actually go back and forth on whether I need to {or even do} mark my photos. But, now with Pinterest and things getting pinned without linking back to their original sources correctly, I like to have my blog stamped on my pictures, then, if someone sees them, they can find me!

Whew...glad to get that out there, now, on to the good parts, how to make a watermark!

The method I use to watermark C&V photos is Picasa. Since Picasa is a super easy to use photo editing software, and it is downloaded on my computer, it is my tool of choice. And adding a watermark is easy!

Choose your font color and size

Adjust transparency (if desired)

Afterwards you can easily remove the watermark by choosing "undo save"

To make your watermark unique, pick out a great font and you're set!

If you want a more complex watermark, with some sort of shape or image, multiple colors or fonts, etc., you will need a picture editing program that can work with layers . Here are two favorites:

Use on the Web

Download

Personally, I use GIMP, I've known about it longer than I've known of Pixlr, so I'm familiar with the interface. However, they're both very similar. If you don't want to download a new program, then Pixlr is a great option. For this post I'm just going to show you how to use GIMP to put a watermark on your photos.

First, open the image you want to watermark

Then open the watermark as layers

Use the "Move Tool" to adjust position

Use "Scale Layer" to adjust only the layer size

Adjust transparency if desired

Then, save your picture! Note: You will need an image with a transparent background for the watermark, but I shared a tutorial for that yesterday, just click here! Questions? Want a simple watermark? Just let me know you're a follower and I'll do a drawing for a few free watermark images!
I'll be using GIMP, a Photoshop-like-program that allows working with transparencies and layers.

First, open a new, transparent, image {I like to adjust mine to 300 px/in}:

Then chose the "Font Tool" and select a font {I'm using Sketch Rockwell}:

Type your text and adjust size and color if desired {since I'm making a watermark, I'm choosing white}:

Add other images/doodles {I'm using the letter "I" from Pea Betsy's Doodles font, then choosing "Flip Horizontal" to change the orientation}

Adjust positioning by using the "Move Tool" {I also freehanded a dotted line using a brush I made with adjusted spacing}:

When all layers are in position, crop image to selected size:

Then, this is where the newest GIMP is a little odd, choose "Export" to save the file as a ".png", this will allow you to keep the transparent background:

Type the name for the file followed by ".png" to save the image and you're done!

I'll be back tomorrow with how to add your new watermark to your images!

Jennie {Clover and Violet}http://www.blogger.com/profile/00729556434427823655noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8567604405702843538.post-81095016906886279322012-05-25T11:12:00.002-07:002012-07-08T08:11:51.889-07:00a bit about blogger, flickr, and photosI've been blogging for a while now, and even though C&V is only a few years old, there are a lot of new {fabulous} blogs popping up all over the place. After an e-mail conversation with one such newer, lovely blogger {hi Jenelle!}, there are a few things I wanted to share with you about blogging your pictures on blogger.

You can post photos from your Flickr to your blog, it's super easy! However, those pictures must link back to their Flickr page {read more here}. So, you cannot use Flickr to host images like blog buttons.

You can host images directly on your blog for buttons! The easiest way to do this is to start a new blog post, upload the image, then grab the image code from the HTML of that post {the link that follows "img src="}. Once the image is uploaded it will stay in your Picasa Web Albums until you delete it, even if you delete the blog post.

Picasa, and therefore your blog, have an upload limit of 1024MB...if you use a newer digital camera, it won't take long to fill this. However, if you join Google+, you can upload unlimited photos smaller than 2048px x 2048px {more here}.

I hope this helps clear a few things up. I'll have some more photo tutorials soon, including great free programs to help you enhance your photos! And, because every post needs a picture, here's my cute Norah:

I made a new watermark to go with the new blog design...<strike>would you like a tutorial on that?</strike>, you can find that tutorial here!
I've been doing a couple blog designs lately, and one of them is finally launched, Bee-Inspired. Gabi wanted a clean, cheerful blog with teals and coral, and this is what I came up with. Our inspiration color palette was this:
Kristy mentioned that she nominated this blog because she's inspired to take better photographs {and she mentions a new camera...do tell!}. So, first I have a photography tip for everyone:

Buy a yard or so of a neutral, textured fabric to take pictures of small items on. For this picture I used a piece of Moda's Crossweave in Sand:

Kindle Cover Tutorial

This way, you can take pictures of small items wherever the light is good, even if the surface isn't great. One of my biggest regrets is taking this picture on a black table:

Doll Quilt Swap 10

I wish I'd put something behind it so the contrast wouldn't have been so strong. And now the quilt lives with its new owner and there isn't a chance to redo it. Lesson learned.

And now, now, I must confess that on some level, I'm not sure about blog awards...I never know what to think of them...perhaps it is because some people don't like them at all, and I worry about negativity.

However, as this blog is kind of a personal space for me, I'm going to go with it {but, if I nominate you for an award and you're not interested...please know that I feel no offense!}.

I did my first photography session of kids other than my own a couple weeks ago! My friend mentioned to me {not knowing that I am looking for photography practice} that she still hadn't taken her son in to get his pictures done since he turned 4. I offered to take a few for her, since I need the practice.

We got out of the house early, hoping to get some nice light {it is usually overcast in the mornings, it figures the sun was nice and bright the day we chose!}, so some of the photos were more washed out than I had wanted. But, overall, I think they turned out pretty good for a first-time. This is one of my favorites!

I also designed this button after some of the Farmer's Wife quilt blocks for a blogging friend of mine's new series: Farmer's Wife in Your Life Once I looked more closely at the blocks, I realized how easy they would be to turn into graphics!

And, I've been behind in posting the results of the giveaway, but the winner is:

Alison of Little Bunny Quilts! I will be designing a new blog for her {and I may draw another winner or two in the next couple of weeks...we'll see how busy I am!}, how fun!
How often does one get to live near the ocean? Well, this is a once-in-a-lifetime for us. So, I want to get some great wave photos while we're here. These are some I took the other night while at the beach.
I hardly ever remember to bring my camera {figures, right?}, so I've missed a lot of great waves. These did need a bit of editing {I used the auto tuning in Picasa and cropped...impressed!}. And, I took these with my camera on Manuel too.
I have a Nikon D3000 {which, unfortunately for me, has been upgraded to the even better D3100}. For any out-and-about photography, I usually take my camera equipped with the 18-55mm kit lens, which is fabulous.

55-200mm VR Lens; 105mm; f/5.0; 1/125s; ISO 100

In addition, I have a Nikon 55-200mm VR Zoom Lens that I use for far-away pictures. This lens is perfect for trips to the zoo, or Mt. Rushmore, etc. However, I find I don't use it that often, as I am then committed to not getting a shot wider than 55mm, and I really like my wide angle shots!

My most recent lens purchase was Nikon's 50mm f/1.8 and it has been love! All of Norah's photos were taken with this lens, and so many other photos you'll see around here too.

Well, that about covers it for now, but I'll be back later with more details on some of my other equipment {although, I'm a really simple kind of girl, so I don't have tons!}

Well, I hadn't initially planned to update Clover & Violet so soon...but while I was surfing the web I found a great tutorial here...and I had to try it! But I needed a compatible header first, and the next thing I knew, I spent most of Saturday designing new graphics. But, I think it was worth it, and I love the new look!

Now, for the fun giveaway...how would you like a blog makeover? Yep! I'm going to give away a free makeover, just leave a comment to tell me why your blog needs a new look. And, for an extra entry, let me know that you're a follower {please leave a second comment for a second entry}. Giveaway closes Thursday, February 2nd, and the winner will be announced shortly after that!
Here's the blog design I did for my bloggy friend Kathy. She's been blogging for a while, and I actually found her blog through a cloth diaper chat. It's a personal blog, so I'm not giving the link here, but she just had her second baby girl, so I thought a blog makeover would be a great gift! She chose the pink and navy, and said she loved Damask...I took it from there! What fun.
I promise. In fact, I probably have more on my to-do list than I should. If you've ventured over here from the blog I share with my mom, Clover & Violet, you may be wondering why I'm starting a new blog...well, it's pretty simple actually. Clover & Violet is so focused on stitching, quilting, and all sorts of textile love, but I have so many more things to write about. So, instead of diversifying a perfectly good blog, I've decided just to start another one {at this point you might think I'm crazy...I probably am...}. So, instead of just rambling, here are some of the adventures you'll find here:

click. - blog and graphic design

snap. - photography of all sorts

swoosh. - my drawing and painting endeavors {okay, I don't paint yet, but I know there are watercolor pencils calling my name...}

laugh. - whatever else I feel like adding

So, join me on this new adventure. It won't be taking the place of Clover & Violet, and it probably won't be as regular, but it just might be <strike>interesting</strike> fun!
